Alias 010: Nicknames of Rotterdam buildings

Published on: 21 May 2019

Rotterdammers have a long tradition of coming up with playful names for their Manhattan on the Maas. The buildings and art in the city are also rarely referred to by their real name. Succesfully so, we sometimes only know iconic architecture by its nickname, such as De Kuip, De Koopgoot or De Zwaan – as the Rotterdammers made up. But do you know what the IJstaart or the Hef is?

Roffa during RA Month

During the RA Month you can visit many striking buildings, with a tour or for an event. Sometimes you can go on it, visit a secret garden, or go underground: at least you will learn more about Rotjeknor and its buildings, including all the nicknames.

About the ‘Whore Walkway’ and ‘Glass Container’

A small selection of the nicknamed buildings that you can visit during #RAM19:

  • De Kapsalonbak – we turn the station building inside out and you can go on its roof!
  • Follow a lecture about high rise buildings in the city center: Gasfabriek alias de Stofzuiger
  • During this tour starting at the Rots van Rem walking past the Fluitketel, you can get a glimpse in the kitchen of  the Koopboog also known as the Groentegrot. The cherry on top will be the Blaakse Bos underneath the Potlood.
  • Enjoy the view on the Hoerenloper nearby the Blokkendoos.
  • This classic is open for public once a year, so do not miss an exclusive visit to the Glasbak!
