Growing food in unexpected places

Gore Tengels is a community of Rotterdammers who create edible gardens in unexpected places across the city. It’s a playful way for people to reconnect with food, nature and each other – right in the middle of the urban landscape.

For the past three years, Gore Tengels experimented on the grounds of Weelde, discovering how much energy, creativity and connection can grow when people simply pick up a shovel together. They are now building a new garden next to the Schiehavenhal – and Gore Tengels got a clear goal: within two years, they aim to turn 600m² into an edible paradise, powered by a thriving community of 200 people who actively contribute to a more sustainable city and inspire others to do the same.

They host weekly gardening sessions, workshops on edible plants, garden dinners, and events where urban renewal literally starts with getting your hands dirty.

During Rotterdam Architecture Month, their garden at the Schiehavenhal is part of the festival hub – a unique chance to experience what happens when citizens take the design of their city into their own hands.
