Rotterdam Circulair

Less, Better, Longer and Again

Rotterdam Circulair is a program of the Municipality of Rotterdam. Rotterdam aims to be fully circular by 2050. In the coming years, the municipality will therefore actively collaborate with partners (such as BlueCity, festival organizers, water boards, other government bodies, etc.) and residents on projects that ensure the city becomes greener, more sustainable, cleaner, and economically stronger. Rotterdam also aims to use 50% fewer primary (abiotic) raw materials by 2030. Primary raw materials are resources that we mine or harvest from the earth itself. We call them abiotic because they do not grow back.

Raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce. The (energy) costs for production and transport are rising. This creates the risk that products will become accessible to fewer and fewer people. That is why our economy must become circular. Because if we use fewer and better materials, and reuse them for longer, Rotterdam will become greener and more sustainable.  In a circular Rotterdam, we consume and produce within the limits of what the Earth can sustain. This means that we only use the Earth’s resources when it can regenerate itself. This way, Rotterdam can be a pleasant, livable, and clean city. Also for the generations after us.  Rotterdam is bursting with valuable raw materials. Dealing with these resources more consciously and utilizing them better yields enormous benefits for the climate, opportunities for our economy, and value for the people of Rotterdam.
