architect I artist

Caroline Bijvoet is a Rotterdam-based architect-artist operating nationally, with her studio in Delfshaven. In Rotterdam, she has realized several projects—always in close collaboration with end users—including the temporary container restaurant Wijn of Water, built from reused containers and demolished in 2020 to make way for new housing on the Lloyd Pier.

As an artist, she is interested in the impact and the “backside” of human actions. She has created installations featuring large-scale paintings about the Port of Rotterdam, as well as works exploring the resilience of people rebuilding their lives after disaster during the postwar reconstruction of the city, with exhibitions at the Maritime Museum and the Laurenskerk.

Her latest series, consisting of four large canvases titled ISRAF, focuses on “waste regret” and connects beautifully with the theme Circular City of Rotterdam Architecture Month 2026. Visual material for “waste regret” was collected at HER/ Rotterdam Circulair, the award-winning environmental park of Rotterdam. She then painted abstractions of this waste in an in-between zone—already removed from everyday life, carefully sorted and grouped, still awaiting reuse or their role as fuel to keep our enormous incinerators running.
