Attend this unique architecture film evening in the floating festival heart. During this film evening there are three short documentaries, Q&As with the makers and a closing drink.

The films that will be screened are: ‘House of Adaptation’ (Powerhouse Company), ‘Droogte in de Delta’ (IABR & Studio Marco Vermeulen) and ‘Visionen Bauen’ (Arte & De Urbanisten). After each short documentary, our host Sophie Stravens will have a chat with the makers.

House of Adaptation

Presented by Powerhouse Company & RED Company  

The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is an NGO working on adapting the world to a changing climate. When looking for a place for their headquarters, the city of Rotterdam proposed donating a building that would float with the rising sea levels. 

The documentary takes the viewers on a journey through the minds of all the people who gave life to this building: politicians, designers, and builders. Why would you build a floating building in the middle of the city, and what does it have to do with climate politics? The film contains the answers to these questions, gives a sneak view into the board rooms of GCA, and holds a place for the legendary mayor of Rotterdam: Ahmed Aboutaleb.  

Droogte in de Delta

Presented by IABR & Studio Marco Vermeulen 

We have been structuring our country smarter and smarter for hundreds of years, focusing on the rapid and efficient drainage of water from the perspective of water safety and agricultural productivity. However, how to retain water to use it when needed is an unexpected and completely new challenge. This requires a shift in thinking and action: from a naturally wet delta that needs to drain water as quickly as possible to keep our feet dry, we need to transition to a delta that can retain freshwater for use when needed. 

The animation “Drought in the Delta” is one of the translations of the results from the research conducted by the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) Atelier DROUGHT IN THE DELTA (2019-2020).

Visionen Bauen follows designers around the world, who are seeking solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time. This episode, set in Rotterdam, focuses on the De Urbanisten and our approach to re-imagine the city as a nature-inclusive and climate adaptive space.

• Doors open at 19.30 hours. The movies have English subtitles and the Q&A will be in English.
• If you visit this program, it is not necessary to buy a separate admission ticket for the festival heart. A ticket for this program already gives you access to the floating festival heart.
• Please report to the welcome desk of the Rotterdam Architecture Month at the square in front of the Maassilo. Here, scan your ticket and receive a wristband that will grant you access to the program in the floating festival heart. If you arrive 30 minutes before the start of the program, you can also take a route through the festival heart.
• IMPORTANT! Do not go directly to the floating platforms without a (program) wristband, as you will not be granted access.
