Architecture cycling expedition: Post ’65 church tour

Een begeleide fietstocht langs verrassende kerkgebouwen

Join a guided cycling tour past surprising church buildings from the post-1965 period. From the South of Rotterdam to the North Bank.

Date: Saturday June 8
Time: 2:30 PM
Duration: 2.5 hours
Start: Church building “Vrede en Verzoening” (Emmaüskerk) – Reyerdijk 67

A large part of our living environment in Rotterdam was built after 1965: homes, offices, shopping centers, schools and churches. It is interwoven with our history and determines our personal and collective identity. However, these buildings now require renovation, adjustment and sustainability. It is therefore important that the significance of this Post 65 heritage is recognized and that we handle it with care.

With this guided cycling tour we hope to strengthen knowledge and recognition of this religious heritage. We visit a number of special church buildings in various city districts from this period. We start in Groot-IJsselmonde with the “Vrede en Verzoening” church building. A Memorial Church, typical of the sixties, with a special architectural design. Then, via the Tarwewijk and Feijenoord, we explore a number of church buildings from the inside and outside, including the Koningskerk from the 1980s, before ending at the Nieuwe Maas at a former Ecumenical Center of the architectural firm Rietveld, van Dillen and van Tricht.
