City Lab Stadspark West
During this City Lab, we will explore how residents and associations of Stadspark West can collectively establish a strong position in relation to upcoming area developments, with a focus on collective strategies, community stewardship, and the value of this 450-hectare urban landscape between the city and its surrounding countryside.
Hidden between the highways and railway lines in the northwestern part of Rotterdam lies a hidden gem: Stadspark West. This is not a neatly manicured park, but an organically grown mosaic covering 450 hectares, where sports, nature, and recreation come together. For decades, allotment gardens, sports clubs, and green-social communities have formed the backbone of the area. Their involvement has created a richly diverse landscape that, due to a lack of connections, remains difficult to fully experience. Since 2021, the Stadspark West initiative has been putting the area on the map as an urban landscape by connecting communities and making its multiple values visible.
Future developments in the Van Nelleknoop area will bring significant changes to the landscape. Stadspark West brings together the different communities as a collective, ensuring that residents and associations continue to help shape not only the present but also the future of this green area.
During this first City Lab session, we will explore how a collective can take up a strategic position in relation to both the landscape and the upcoming area developments. Using three examples from Rotterdam and beyond, we will discuss best practices in collective empowerment and collaboration.
