Cultural and historical tour through the Museum Garden

During Rotterdam Architecture Month you have a unique opportunity to experience the history of the museum garden. Korneel Aschman guides a tour of the garden and will tell you everything about the history of this special place. He guides you through what the garden used to look like and tells you what interventions were made to create the garden that you can see today.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was built in the 1930s. Architect Ad van der Steur (1893-1953) designed the building and also designed the characteristic museum garden. The museum garden is located at the rear of the museum building and extends to the G.J. the Jongh Monument. Both the museum building and the garden are designated as national monuments.

The museum building is currently being thoroughly renovated. As part of this renovation, the municipality of Rotterdam is making preparations to also give the museum garden a makeover.

To understand the history of the garden, a Cultural Historical Exploration was started at the end of 2023. Research was conducted into what Van der Steur’s original garden design looked like and which elements were added later. This research will help the municipality make design choices when renovations of the garden start in a couple of years.

Tour guide Korneel Arschman works as a heritage expert in the field of historic gardens and has advised the municipality of Rotterdam in drawing up the Cultural Historical Exploration.
