Design and Build workshop with Observatorium

a 4-day build and design workshop

In this 4-day workshop you will design and build a temporary installation with the artist collective Observatorium. The installation responds to the ever – and faster – changing world, where a vision for a dreamed future can be a powerful statement to make changes tangible, to turn dreams into reality and to get people moving.

For a city like Rotterdam, which is also subject to major changes such as global warming, it is important to reflect on those changes, to imagine them and make them tangible for yourself and for the people around you. Not necessarily to solve them but to understand them, hold them, turn them, rethink them and put them in a different perspective.

During this workshop transition is embraced and shown in extremes. The notion of an oasis as a metaphor in the City will be explored. What is the urban desert in a city like Rotterdam, and what is thus the oasis? What is changing and how do you show it?

What does the workshop entail?

The workshop starts with a tour around some of the built projects by Observatorium and a lecture about their way of working. Afterwards participants will collectively design a temporary installation that should function as an Urban Oasis, responding to changing climate and the warming up of the city. Eventually all participants will roll up their sleeves and build together in a public space in the surroundings of the school.
