Expedition BlueCity Circular Water

Dive into the future with Expedition BlueCity Circular Water.

Living zero-waste, developing future-proof materials such as tiles made from duckweed, walls made from seaweed and beer made from rainwater. On the banks of the Nieuwe Maas, on the Maasboulevard, in that building that we often still call Tropicana, there is the blue city. Clever minds, pioneers and inventors work together with nature and on the Rotterdam of tomorrow.

During this BlueCity Expedition, you dive in two hours into the world of BlueCityand get a guided tour through the former subtropical swimming paradiseYou see, smell and hear how the circular economy and the BlueCity Circular Water project gets shape in BlueCity!

BlueCity Circular Water

Separate sanitary water flows are realized in the basement of BlueCity with the aim of reusing these water flows. Used water is given a new purpose in the building. Raw materials such as compost and fertilizers are extracted in the process. The water is reused as efficiently as possible. This month the toilets have been installed and the grey water system is put into use. Grey water is water that comes from the sink, shower, but also rainwater is also often referred to as grey water. We convert these types of water into toilet flushing water. During this special BlueCity Circular Water expedition, Peter Scheer, director of SEMiLLA, will tell you all about this unique project and the associated research. Including lame poop and pee jokes of course!

The BlueCity Circular Water project originated from a collaboration between SEMiLLA Sanitation, BlueCity, Nijhuis Saur Industries, Alliantie Waterkracht, Kansen voor West Hoogheemraadschap Schieland & Krimpenerwaard, Waterschap Hollandse Delta and Hoogheemraadschap Delfland.
