Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum and Erasmus University Rotterdam will take you on a tour showcasing examples of how nature, climate adaptation, health and urban development can reinforce one another. The focus is on the Green Corridors initiative: a vision for the future in which existing green and blue infrastructure – from the River Maas to the Kralingse Bos – is better connected. Research shows that it is precisely this connectivity that leads to greater social value, better health, greater biodiversity and a more attractive living environment.
Along the way, we’ll also highlight inspiring initiatives that are already bringing this vision to life. For example, the Zeldenooit Foundation demonstrates how relatively small interventions can contribute to a larger ecological network. By connecting flower-rich verges, nature-friendly management practices and habitats for insects and other animals, they are working to create a green corridor stretching from the River Maas via the Oude Plantage, Trompenburg and Burgemeester Oudlaan towards the Kralingse Bos.
You’ll also get a glimpse behind the scenes at Trompenburg itself. How do we approach circularity in a botanical garden? Which materials are reused? How do we repurpose prunings, leaves and other waste streams? And how are we working towards a climate-resilient garden that’s ready for the challenges of the future?
This walk is of interest to anyone curious about the relationship between nature, architecture, urban planning, biodiversity and the future of Rotterdam.
