Lecture Vertical Urban Factory by Nina Rappaport
Opening of the exhibition HOW DO WE WANT TO WORK M4H 2030
American architecture critic, curator, teacher and consultant Nina Rappaport opens the exhibition ‘HOW DO WE WANT TO WORK IN M4H 2030’ with an opening lecture.
She leads the ‘Vertical Urban Factory’ think tank, which bridges the gap between academic research and practice-oriented advice on urban production and the value of the manufacturing industry for cities. The focus is on the continued use of old industrial sites and ways to build the production areas for the future. The Vertical Urban Factory exhibition is the main exhibition of the umbrella exhibition that opens on June 3rd in de KeileZaal and will host various workshops and lectures in the field of the circular economy until July 14.

Speaker
Nina Rappaport is an architectural critic, curator, educator, consultant, and director of Vertical Urban Factory.
The Vertical Urban Factory project includes a book, exhibition, research branch, and consultancy for spaces for manufacturers in cities. Nina consults on projects with architectural teams, and has worked on projects in Paris, Brussels, Russia, and New York. She provides advisory services to municipalities and companies to assist in the retention of production spaces and jobs. Projects range from individual building owners to factories working to expand as well as, most recently, worker-owned cooperatives.
The project and active research for urban industry began with seminars and studios on the topic in 2008. Nina curated an exhibition Vertical Urban Factory with graphic design by Sarah Gephart of MGMT.Design and the exhibit design by Studio Tractor. VUF is a project of the New York Foundation for the Arts.
She is publications director at Yale School of Architecture and editor of the biannual publication Constructs, the exhibition catalogs, and a book series. She is history/theory coordinator and teaches at the School of Public Architecture at Kean University in New Jersey.
Nina is a founder, former President, and current Vice President of Docomomo-New York/Tri-State. She was a Design Trust for Public Space Fellow and co-author of the book, Long Island City: Connecting the Arts (Episode Books, 2006). Nina's previous books include Ezra Stoller: Photographer with co-editor Erica Stoller (Yale University Press, 2012) and Support and Resist: Structural Engineers and Design Innovation (The Monacelli Press, 2007). She has contributed essays to Architecture, Architectural Record, 306090, Praxis, Perspecta, Scapes, Metropolis, Future Anterior, and Tec21 among other journals and publications.
In 2019 she was a Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Torino and in 2018 a Visiting Professor at Sapienza Roma. She often serves as advisor on PhD and masters thesis on industrial urbanism and architecture topics.
In addition, Nina has taught seminars and studios on urban theory and industrial urbanism in the Syracuse in NYC architecture program, Barnard College, Parsons School of Design, City College, and Yale School of Architecture.
