One of the most urgent transition tasks in the field of densification, sustainability and climate change lies in the existing city. Houses must be made energy-efficient and future-proof, infrastructure must be renovated and subsidence must be tackled. These are transformations that have a major impact on the living environment of residents and are complex due to the differences in ownership and the way in which the problems can be tackled.

At the same time, major gains can be achieved in the field of sustainability in the existing stock, both in the field of social challenges and in the field of energy and climate. A sustainable home and living environment with lifelong homes also contributes to affordability, social cohesion and the liveability of the neighborhood in the future.

During this session of the Platform Spatial Design (PRO) we therefore focus on the potential of the existing stock and build on the theme of the first PRO of 2024 on climate risks. We map out the challenges at stake and what the role of the designer is and can be in complex, area-oriented and specific transformations.

PRO Special: Bike tour

This edition we are again organizing a bicycle tour prior to the meeting. From 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM we will visit inspiring example projects in Rotterdam that deal with the existing stock; interesting because of their process, execution and collaboration. About the Spatial Design Platform (PRO)

With the Spatial Design Platform, AIR wants to stimulate meetings and knowledge sharing within the Rotterdam design sector and the municipality of Rotterdam and the city council. The members of the platform reflect the agencies established and active in Rotterdam. The platform meets at least three times a year and aims to create an open exchange of ideas between the municipality of Rotterdam, the councilor and the design community about the spatial tasks for Rotterdam. The platform focuses on the architecture policy in the form of an annual action agenda. The PRO is organized in collaboration with the municipality of Rotterdam.

• The Henket Pavilion is located in the southern wing of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, adjacent to the Museum Garden. The entrance can be found on the side of the Museum, located on the Melkkoppad. The entrance can be recognized by a large Rotterdam Architecture Month sign.
