Opbouwdag (Constuction day) is a typical Rotterdam event. The rebuilding of the city is celebrated on May 18. On that day, four days after the bombing in 1940, city architect Witteveen was commissioned to design a new city. For years, on the Opbouwdag, Rotterdam looked forward to the new city. During Opbouwdag we look both back and forward at the city in which reconstruction has played such a major role. 

Opbouwdag: 75 year anniversary
 

Opbouwdag 2022 is an extra festive edition, because the very first edition was 75 years ago. Characteristic of the early editions of Opbouwdag was the view to the future. The old city was not rebuilt, but work was done on a new and modern city. The city was a breeding ground for experiment, full of zest and energy. This view of the future has never disappeared. Opbouwdag is therefore this year dominated by the ‘Future as a tradition. 

Programme

Opbouwdag 2022 includes (walking) tours, lectures, exhibitions, the presentation of the ‘Reconstruction architecture guide’ and there are again a number of striking reconstruction buildings to visit. Check the website for the full programme.
