Reading the Urban Landscape
Walkshop with Lorenzo Bertolotto
We often contra-pose man and nature, artificial and natural. This dichotomy is way more blurry than we think and, as part of the same planet, humans are constantly influencing the environment that surrounds them, and vice versa. Walking in the city, there are plenty of signs that remind us about this interconnection, you just have to be curious and read them. The spontaneous plants that grow between the tiles, the slightly crooked klinkers that adjust to the soft soils of the Delta, or lichens growing on a wall can all be clues to understand the urban Landscape.
Landscape architect Lorenzo Bertolotto will take you along the streets of Rotterdam to explore the often overlooked natural details that dot our city. Lorenzo is a landscape architect at the Urbanisten. He is involved in innovative projects that deal with urban resilience by enforcing city nature, like the Sponge Garden in M4H. He is also the herder of the urban flock of five dutch Merino sheep that graze at the Dakpark.
So put on your walking boots and join us to explore the (hidden) urban nature that lurks beneath the pavement!
