Timeline of the residential floor plan – Museum house the Kiefhoek

Every Saturday in June you can visted The Kiefhoek Museum House for free. Have a look at this extremely efficiently laid out house from the 1920s, an example of the desire for ‘better living’ and there is also an exhibition by De Zwarte Hond and Studio NadiaNena.

In collaboration with De Zwarte Hond, Studio NadiaNena drew a visual timeline of the residential floor plan. This timeline includes crucial developments and events that have influenced the evolution of housing classification from approximately 1900 to the present. Every Saturday in June this drawing can be viewed, studied and discussed in the Kiefhoek museum home.

The house plan is more than a spatial layout, it is related to cultural, social and technological developments and events. From box bed in alcove home to housing law, to serial production, from balcony for laundry to balcony for relaxing, central TV, to natural gas, oil crisis, a sea of sunny homes until the bubble burst, shell super lofts, sustainability label to building building building…

The timeline reflects the results of the research into residential floor plans by architectural firm De Zwarte Hond that led to OutThere #4. This book magazine is a plea for improvement and emphasizes the need to focus on the quality of Dutch residential floor plans.
