Rotterdamse school buildings

Opportunities for students and designers in the development of school buildings

Rotterdam faces a major challenge in the construction and renovation of educational facilities: with 350 school buildings, more than half of which are over 45 years old, and a growing population expected to reach 730,000 inhabitants by 2040, the city must realize hundreds of projects in the coming years to replace outdated buildings and create new capacity. The urgency is high, as many buildings no longer meet modern standards for sustainability, safety, and flexibility, while demand continues to grow.

In the coming years, many young people in Rotterdam will experience the construction or renovation of their school firsthand — something they are likely to remember for the rest of their lives. How can the child’s perspective be incorporated into the design and development of new and renovated school buildings? And can these projects also be used as learning opportunities for children, and if so, what can they learn from them?

During this interactive session, the Municipality of Rotterdam and Archiklas invite participants to creatively explore how students’ perspectives can be included in the development of educational buildings, as well as which learning opportunities are already there for the taking.
