During this session on June 25, Sophie Duran (advisor circular and social construction M4H) and Daniel Bieckmann (Construction Transition Manager | Rotterdam Circulair) will present promising circular initiatives in M4H that call for collective ownership.

To develop an area in a circular way, space is needed for experimentation and innovation. It also requires collective efforts to address circular challenges and projects that serve both the community and the district in its transition towards a circular economy. Examples include a materials hub, innovation facilities, and other shared initiatives that create value for the entire ecosystem.

How do we make this happen?

A consortium of public authorities, developers, knowledge institutions, educational organisations, and local users offers significant potential to jointly invest in and drive circular development. Think of initiatives such as a materials hub, an innovation lab, a social return on investment programme aligned with the area’s ambitions, and a Circular Residency. These are invaluable assets and key drivers of change—but they can only be realised through collaboration.

That is why we are exploring a form of partnership that enables stakeholders to invest, experiment, and innovate together, while ensuring that both benefits and responsibilities are shared fairly.

A partnership model that reflects the identity and potential of M4H, creates opportunities for both existing and future users, and contributes to collective impact on the area’s circular ambitions and challenges.

Mirjam Schmull (Brokkenmakers) will share the success story of the Merwedelab in Utrecht, and a panel of local experts from the private sector, education, and government will explore the roles each stakeholder can play in addressing the area’s circular challenges together.
