Holy Houses: Lecture organic architecture Michaëlkerk
Come and join this lecture by prof. ir. Pieter van der Ree about the organic architecture of the Michaëlkerk.
Churches and cathedrals are among the highlights of Western architectural history and have often formed the heart of urban communities. In their design space, visual art and music were used to support the religious experience of the faithful. Dimensional proportions, light, colour, religious images and symbolism played an important role in this.
Design also plays an important role in organic architecture. It tries to make life processes in nature and in humans experienceable.
In the Michaëlkerk in Rotterdam, designed by Henk Hupkes, these two approaches come together in their own unique way. With its sculptural and dynamic design, this church building aims to open up another dimension and rise above its profane environment.
